  81. Chartist is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  82. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  83. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  84. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  85. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  86. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  87. continue to develop new products.

  89. If you continue to use Chartist after 30 days, you must make a
  90. registration payment of $69.95 (plus $3.00 shipping and applicable
  91. taxes) to Novagraph. Payment of the registration fee will license
  92. one copy for use on any one computer at any one time.

  94. You must treat this software just like a book.    An example is
  95. that this software may be used by any number of people
  96. and may be freely moved from one computer location to another,
  97. so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location
  98. while it is being used at another.

  100. Commercial users of Chartist must register and pay for their
  101. copies of Chartist within 30 days of first use or their license
  102. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  103. tacting Novagraph.

  105. Anyone distributing Chartist for any kind of remuneration must
  106. first contact Novagraph at the address below for authorization.
  107. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  108. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  109. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  110. Chartist immediately (However Novagraph must still be advised so
  111. that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
  112. version of Chartist).

  157. To install the software, copy all files from the distribution
  158. into a directory on your hard drive.

  160. To set up the Chartist icon in the Program Manager, refer to
  161. "Adding Program Items and Documents to a Group" in Chapter 3
  162. of the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.

  164. To set up an association in Windows with Chartist Documents,
  165. refer to "Associating Documents with an Application" in Chapter 4
  166. of the Microsoft Windows User's Guide. Chartist Documents have a
  167. file type of "CHT."

  201. All sample files were created with an HP LaserJet IIIP printer
  202. selected.  All text uses the fonts available with that printer.
  203. If you print these charts using a different printer, the fonts
  204. may not map into optimal selections on that printer,
  205. especially if the smaller fonts are not available.

  209. Tips:
  210.  
  211. "Shape File Not Found, Exiting..."
  212. ==================================
  213. If you get this error message you have probably moved the Chartist
  214. application files to a new directory after having run Chartist at least
  215. one time. When Chartist runs for the first time it creates a file,
  216. CHARTIST.INI, in your WINDOWS directory. There, Chartist maintains various
  217. settings, including the path to the last loaded shape library. If
  218. you move the shape file, Chartist can no longer find it along the path
  219. indicated in CHARTIST.INI. The solution is to delete CHARTIST.INI from
  220. the WINDOWS directory. Chartist will then build a new one with the
  221. correct path information in it.
  222.  
  223. Fitting Text Into Symbols
  224. =========================
  225. The size of text in a symbol is displayed most accurately at
  226. 100% scale and with "View Text As Printed" checked. At reduced scales
  227. text may look as if it is too big for the symbol.  Also if you use
  228. one of the type manager products, such as ATM, the View Text As Printed
  229. feature may not expand the displayed text enough to show its full
  230. horizontal extent.  You can select the symbol in question and print it
  231. alone using the "Print Selection" Check box in the Print Chart dialog.
  232. This will give you a quick hard copy look at the symbol and text.
  233.  
  234.   Note:
  235.   ====
  236.   The file CHARTRFN.FON contains raster fonts that are used
  237.   to display very small text (i.e. at reduced scales).    As the display
  238.   scale is reduced, the actual fonts used by the symbol or line may
  239.   be replaced by these fonts (for display purposes only).  The result
  240.   is similar to "greek", in that the text is not particularly readable,
  241.   but it approximates the size it should be at the display scale. If for
  242.   some reason this font file is deleted from the application directory,
  243.   this "greek" effect will not operate.  To restore the font, just copy
  244.   the file back into the application directory from the distribution
  245.   disk.
  246.  
  247. Making Symbols a Uniform Size
  248. =============================
  249. To make several symbols the same size as any symbol in your chart, select
  250. the symbol with the desired size. (Say that you stretched that symbol
  251. to hold some text, and want all the other symbols to be the same size.)
  252. Choose the Options Default Symbol Size... command (There is a Tool Bar
  253. button for this command. See the manual), click on the Copy From Symbol
  254. button. Then click on OK.  Select the other symbols and choose the
  255. Symbol Reset Size command. (There is also a Tool Bar
  256. button for this command.)
  257.  
  258. Where the Tool Bar Icons Are Defined
  259. ====================================
  260. Each Tool Bar Icon button selects a command from the menu. To see
  261. what commands are tied to the Tool Bar, press F1 from the main Chartist
  262. Window. This brings up the top level Help Index for Chartist.  There is
  263. a Tool Bar Topic that you can click on, and that will tell you what you
  264. need to know.

  266. Routing Lines
  267. =============
  268. As described in the documentation, lines route automatically based on
  269. the designated entry and exit points on symbols, and the routing style.
  270. In complex charts, or in areas where symbol placement is constrained
  271. by the layout of the overall chart, lines may want to route "on top of"
  272. other symbols.
  273.  
  274. You can control this easily with the use of symbols with the "Titl-Cent"
  275. shape. Symbols with this shape are typically used for areas of text in
  276. the chart that do not need borders (such as titles, notes, etc). Symbols
  277. with this shape also have a special property with respect to lines:
  278.  
  279.   Any lines connected to a symbol with a Titl-Cent shape run
  280.   all the way to the center of that symbol, not just to the outside
  281.   boundary.
  282.  
  283. This means that you can use the Titl-Cent shape as a universal line
  284. connector/anchor. Just position the symbol where you need to turn a corner
  285. or otherwise constrain the routing of a line. Then run lines to and from
  286. this symbol as needed, using it as an anchor point. You can select individual
  287. lines and remove arrowheads if you want, for aesthetics.
  288.  
  289. Remember that the entry and exit points of a line with respect to a symbol
  290. are designated when you draw the line, by how close to one of the four sides
  291. of the symbol you are when you click the mouse button. So do not make the
  292. Titl-Cent shaped symbol you are using for a connector/anchor so small that
  293. you cannot draw lines conveniently into or out of it.

  297. Help File / Documentation Errata
  298.  
  299. In the Tool Bar, the sample line and line font description
  300. are now side-by-side instead of stacked as shown in the Tool Bar Help
  301. Topic. This minor change was made recently to avoid clipping that text
  302. on very high resolution displays, where the buttons get small-ish.
  303.  
  304. The Accelerator Key for Symbol Reference... is Ctrl+F4, not Alt+F4
  305. as documented.

  309.  
  310. WordPerfect For Windows 5.1 Issue
  311. =================================
  312.  
  313. There is a problem in how WordPerfect For Windows interprets Metafile
  314. Pictures clipped from Chartist and other applications. It is our under-
  315. standing at this writing that WordPerfect is aware of their problem
  316. and plans to correct it in an interim release. If you use WordPerfect for
  317. Windows, you may experience problems with printed text appearance from
  318. Chartist metafile pictures. Chartist uses the MM_ANISTROPIC mode
  319. for metafile pictures, which is the most accepted format. Also, Chartist
  320. adheres to all other standard practices for clipboard data exchange.
  321.  
  322. Library Shapes
  323. ==============
  324.  
  325. A common question asked is about additional shapes to those
  326. available in the standard shape file. We generally add shapes to
  327. the shape file on user request. So far the additions have been very
  328. simple, and we have not charged extra for this service. Just about any
  329. shape that can be represented as one or more polygons or polylines
  330. can be quickly generated and added to the shape file. When you register
  331. just describe or sketch out the shape you want, and we will do our best
  332. to accomodate you.

  334. If you still want to "roll your own", there is a shape library technical
  335. document and support package available to registered users. Creating shapes
  336. is fairly technical, but the standard shape library provides many examples
  337. that you can build upon. The shape library technical document with 6 months
  338. of technical support for making shapes cost an extra $25 (plus applicable
  339. taxes).
